When you need family lawyers in Sheffield, you also need to know which of two West Bar buildings your case belongs in. We tell you whether yours is 48 or 50 before you file. We advise people in Hillsborough, Burngreave, Ecclesall, Darnall and every other part of the city on divorce, finances and arrangements for children. Family justice here has a shape found nowhere else: Sheffield Designated Family Court is the only court in England and Wales that HMCTS names that way. Its work splits across both buildings, which share one postcode, one DX and one County Court code, and children's social care sits with Sheffield City Council alone.

Complex Children Specialist & Client Support
The person you speak to is chosen for what 48 West Bar actually lists. Iblal Iqbal's published focus — complex children cases involving safeguarding concerns and allegations of domestic abuse, and strategic oversight of non-molestation and occupation orders — maps onto a West Bar list running to adoption, domestic abuse, female genital mutilation and forced marriage.
What a special guardianship case from Sheffield actually involves
A grandchild is raised by a grandparent who cannot enrol them at school or consent to treatment. The court had to decide whether special guardianship served the child better than a lives-with order. The route was Children Act 1989 s.14A. From Sheffield, that goes to Sheffield Designated Family Court, 48 West Bar.
The court made a special guardianship order in favour of the grandparent. This gave the grandparent the authority to make the child’s day-to-day upbringing decisions while preserving the parents’ legal status and parental responsibility. The order reflected the court’s assessment of the child’s welfare on the evidence available in that individual case. Every case turns on its own facts, evidence and welfare considerations; this outcome is not a prediction or promise about any other family’s circumstances.
Outcomes turn entirely on the facts of each case. Nothing here is a prediction or a promise about any other case.
Which Sheffield court is my case in — 48 or 50 West Bar?
Both, depending on what you are asking for: Sheffield Designated Family Court is at 48 West Bar, and Sheffield Combined Court Centre, the Law Courts, is at 50 West Bar. They share the postcode S3 8PH, the DX and one County Court location code, 320, so the code on your notice will not separate them — but GOV.UK’s two jurisdiction lists do. 48 West Bar handles adoption, childcare arrangements after you separate, divorce hearings, domestic abuse, female genital mutilation and forced marriage, while Financial Remedy appears only on the 50 West Bar list. Sheffield is also its own Designated Family Judge area — one of six on the North East Circuit, alongside Teesside, Humberside, Newcastle, York and Leeds — and both of its family buildings stand on West Bar.
Will one person handle both halves of my case?
It should, because in Sheffield the halves have different front doors on West Bar. GOV.UK lists divorce hearings at 48 and at 50 West Bar, but it lists the financial remedy that settles the house and the pensions at 50 only. If you are comparing divorce specialists in Sheffield, ask whether money and children sit in separate departments, because that splits a case West Bar has already split across two buildings. Kabir Family Law does family law and nothing else, so one specialist holds the 48 West Bar side and the 50 West Bar side, and you speak to that person before you instruct anyone.
Which council gets the three months’ notice if you are applying from Sheffield?
Sheffield City Council, in most cases — the GOV.UK council finder returns it on its own for S3 8PH, with no county tier above it. For a grandparent in Burngreave or Stocksbridge, that is where the written notice required by Children Act 1989 s.14A(7) goes, three months before the application is made. If a different authority is looking after the child, the notice goes to that one instead. Post it to the wrong council and the three months has not run. Then s.14A(11) stops Sheffield Designated Family Court making any order until the report comes back, so a decision that takes ten seconds at the post box can cost a season.
Getting to West Bar, and where to meet family lawyers in Sheffield first
An office address is a poor way to choose who handles your case, because your hearing will be at West Bar whatever you decide. Getting there has its own Sheffield quirks. GOV.UK records no parking at 48 West Bar, with paid off-site parking within 500 metres at the Galleries or Nelson Street, and the counter open by prior appointment only, Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm. Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone is Class C, which on the GOV.UK table covers vans, minibuses, taxis and private hire vehicles but not cars. So driving your own car in is never the thing that costs you, though a van or a taxi can be. Our nearest office is Nottingham, and pre-booked face-to-face appointments can be arranged in Sheffield or at our Nottingham office, whichever suits you better.
Why call divorce specialists in Sheffield before the 48 West Bar counter?
The counter opens by prior appointment for four hours a day, and one phone call beforehand is what saves you a wasted morning there. You get a specialist rather than a switchboard, and we will not hand you a form to copy. In that first conversation you find out which West Bar building your matter belongs in, whether a notice period has to start before anything can be issued, and what the next month actually looks like. There is no obligation. If you are looking for family lawyers in Sheffield, call 0330 094 5880 and book a free consultation.
