Anyone looking for family lawyers in Croydon should know one thing first: a CR postcode can put you in Croydon, Merton, Sutton, or Tandridge in Surrey. We advise people across the borough — Thornton Heath, Purley, New Addington, South Norwood — on divorce, finances and arrangements for children. Croydon also holds one of only nine family courts in England and Wales taking Domestic Abuse Protection Order applications. Which side of the Tandridge line you fall on decides what you can even ask for, so we settle that before you file anything.

The person you speak to is chosen for what an Altyre Road caseload throws up. Iblal Iqbal has a published remit covering strategic oversight of non-molestation, occupation and other protective orders, and complex children cases involving safeguarding concerns — the work a pilot borough generates more of than most, with Bromley the only other London court taking those applications.

What a special guardianship case from Croydon actually involves

A grandparent was already raising a grandchild. The court had to decide what order made that arrangement durable without ending the parents’ legal status. The route is Children Act 1989 s.14A, which starts with three months’ notice to the right local authority under s.14A(7). From Croydon, that application is heard at Croydon County Court and Family Court on Altyre Road.

The choice between these is a welfare decision under s.1(1), taken with the s.1(3) checklist and the s.1(5) no-order principle, and with the full range of the court’s powers in mind under s.1(3)(g). The court made a special guardianship order in favour of the grandparent. This gave the grandparent the authority to make the child’s day-to-day upbringing decisions while preserving the parents’ legal status and parental responsibility.

Outcomes turn entirely on the facts of each case. Nothing here is a prediction or a promise about any other case.

Which court hears a family case from Croydon?

It is Croydon County Court and Family Court, at The Law Courts on Altyre Road. GOV.UK gives the Altyre Road court county court location code 182 and lists the building as open Monday to Friday from 7:45am to 5:45pm. It also records the counter as open by appointment only, so you cannot simply hand a form in at a desk. The same page lists four interview rooms in the family suite and no disabled parking on site, pointing instead to Ruskin Square or the NCP at Croydon Whitgift.

Is the Domestic Abuse Protection Order route open to me in Croydon?

That turns on the other person’s address, not yours: it has to be Croydon, Sutton or Bromley. GOV.UK lists nine family courts in England and Wales taking these applications, and Croydon is one of them. The London pilot has covered Croydon, Sutton and Bromley since 27 November 2024. If the person you need protection from lives in Sutton, GOV.UK says you may apply at Croydon or at Bromley. If they live in Caterham or Warlingham — CR postcodes, but Tandridge in Surrey — the route is closed, and a non-molestation or occupation order becomes the question instead. A Warlingham address mistaken for a Croydon one costs weeks you may not have. We can check that address in minutes, before you build a plan around a fee-free route you cannot use.

My address says Croydon. Is my local authority Croydon?

Not always. Checked against the GOV.UK council finder, a CR postcode returns the London Borough of Croydon for Kenley, Purley and Thornton Heath. Parts of CR4 return the London Borough of Merton or the London Borough of Sutton instead. For Caterham and Warlingham, it returns Tandridge District Council, with Surrey County Council above it. Where a grandparent applies for a special guardianship order, Children Act 1989 s.14A(7) requires three months’ written notice to the authority in whose area they are ordinarily resident: Croydon for Kenley, Tandridge for Caterham. Send it to Tandridge when it should have gone to Croydon and the three months start again, before the application can be issued at all.

How can you tell whether divorce specialists in Croydon know the Tandridge boundary?

Ask a question that has a Croydon answer. The borough sits inside the protective-order pilot and on a boundary it shares with Sutton, Merton and Tandridge, so the first advice you get should already be steering which order, in which court, notified to which authority. Where family lawyers in Croydon work inside a practice that does a bit of everything, those three questions get split between departments. Kabir Family Law does family law and nothing else, so one specialist holds the Altyre Road listing, the pilot question and the notice question at once — and you can speak to that person before you instruct anyone.

Picking family lawyers in Croydon by who answers, not where they sit

The hearing stays at Altyre Road whoever advises you, so the real difference is not an office near the court but who picks up. You get a specialist rather than a switchboard, and the first things settled are which order fits, whether Croydon or Bromley is where it belongs, and which authority any notice has to reach. Our nearest office is Fulham, and where you want to sit across a table from someone, pre-booked local appointments can be arranged, in Croydon or at the Fulham office.

Whether you need divorce specialists in Croydon or protection from someone at home, there is no obligation beyond a first conversation. Call 0330 094 5880 and book a free consultation.
