Leeds splits its family work between Oxford Row and Westgate, two buildings that do not do the same job, so any family lawyers in Leeds you speak to should be able to tell you which one hears your case. Leeds Combined Court Centre on Oxford Row carries Family Court location code 243 and is listed for divorce hearings and financial remedy. Leeds District Magistrates' Court and Family Court on Westgate is listed for childcare arrangements on separation and nothing else. We advise people from Headingley, Chapel Allerton, Morley, Otley and the rest of the city on divorce, money and children. Leeds also has its own Designated Family Judge, HHJ Sarah Greenan.

Complex Children Specialist & Client Support
You will speak to Hannah Overton, whose published specialism — complex children work, child arrangements disputes, cases where grandparents and extended family are trying to stay in touch, and matters involving the local authority or Cafcass — is the shape of a great deal of Leeds work, where three Kinship Care Teams sit behind every relative-carer application.
What a special guardianship case from Leeds actually involves
A grandchild lived with a grandparent who held no legal authority. The court had to decide whether to grant it while the parents kept theirs. The route is Children Act 1989 s.14A. In Leeds that goes to Leeds Combined Court Centre, LS1 3BG.
The choice between these is a welfare decision under s.1(1), taken with the s.1(3) checklist and the s.1(5) no-order principle, and with the full range of the court’s powers in mind under s.1(3)(g). The court made a special guardianship order in favour of the grandparent. This gave the grandparent the authority to make the child’s day-to-day upbringing decisions while preserving the parents’ legal status and parental responsibility. The order reflected the court’s assessment of the child’s welfare on the evidence available in that individual case.
Outcomes turn entirely on the facts of each case. Nothing here is a prediction or a promise about any other case.
Which Leeds court will hear my family case — Oxford Row or Westgate?
It depends what you have applied for: Oxford Row and Westgate are not interchangeable. GOV.UK lists Leeds Combined Court Centre, 1 Oxford Row, LS1 3BG, for adoption, divorce hearings, financial remedy, domestic abuse, forced marriage, female genital mutilation and childcare arrangements on separation. It lists Leeds District Magistrates’ Court and Family Court, Westgate, for childcare arrangements on separation, crime and the single justice procedure — nothing else on the family side. Only Oxford Row carries a Family Court location code, 243; Westgate carries a magistrates’ code, 2375.
The paperwork will not resolve it either: Oxford Row and Westgate publish one family inbox for the paper route, covering C100 applications and financial remedy together. Read the building named on your notice, not the postcode.
Can the money and the children end up at Oxford Row on the same day?
They can, and that cannot happen at Westgate. Oxford Row, LS1 3BG, is listed for divorce hearings, financial remedy, childcare arrangements on separation and domestic abuse, and the one Leeds family inbox takes the C100 and the financial remedy paper together. So the question to ask divorce specialists in Leeds is who will hold both halves. Kabir Family Law does family law and nothing else, so one specialist holds both strands of a Leeds case, at Oxford Row or Westgate, and you speak to them before instructing anyone.
Who has to be given notice if a relative is bringing up a child in Leeds?
In almost every Leeds case, it is Leeds City Council. The GOV.UK council finder returns it alone, with no county tier above it, and its three Kinship Care Teams are who a relative carer ends up dealing with. Children Act 1989 s.14A(7) bars any special guardianship application until three months’ written notice of intention has gone to the right authority. For a family living in Headingley or Rothwell, that is Leeds City Council; for a child already looked after, it is the authority looking after them. Leeds publishes a kinship duty line and a separate special guardianship inbox in its kinship care guide, and the council says it actively encourages kinship care where that is safe.
Address the notice to the wrong authority and the three months start again. Then s.14A(11) stops the court making the order at all until it has that authority’s report. Those two provisions are why relative carers lose half a year — and why when you apply for special guardianship matters as much as what you apply for.
Leeds has its own Designated Family Judge — does that change anything?
Your case is led locally. The judiciary’s published list of Designated Family Judges shows Leeds as its own area on the North East circuit, alongside Teesside, Humberside, Newcastle, York and Sheffield. HHJ Sarah Greenan was appointed to Leeds on 1 November 2025. York, where our nearest office is, is a separate DFJ area on the same circuit under HHJ Jill Troy. Instructing a York-based firm rather than family lawyers in Leeds itself does not move your case there: a Leeds case is listed, timetabled and led in Leeds.
Meeting family lawyers in Leeds before an Oxford Row or Westgate hearing
Kabir Family Law has no office in Leeds. Pre-booked face-to-face appointments can be arranged, in Leeds or at the York office, and where you meet does not change where your case sits: that is Oxford Row or Westgate either way.
What can divorce specialists in Leeds answer before anything is filed?
You reach a specialist rather than a switchboard. In the first conversation, three Leeds questions usually get settled: whether Oxford Row or Westgate is where your matter belongs, whether a three-month notice clock should start today, and who the right recipient is. You say what has happened, and you are told which routes are open and what each would cost. You are not asked to decide anything on the call, including whether to take it any further.
