Before choosing family lawyers in Swindon, it helps to know that family justice here runs through one building: Swindon Combined Court on Islington Street. Crown, county and family business all share that address, and its Family Court location code is 345. Swindon has its own Designated Family Judge, and children's social care sits with Swindon Borough Council, not with Wiltshire. We advise people across the town — Old Town, Gorse Hill, Upper Stratton, Wroughton — on children arrangements, divorce and finances. We tell you whether yours is an Islington Street matter or one that never goes near it.

Complex Children Specialist & Client Support
Swindon enquiries go to Iblal Iqbal, Partner and Family Law Strategist. His published specialism is complex children work where safeguarding or abuse allegations are in play, alongside protective orders — which is the mix Islington Street lists at one address: adoption, childcare arrangements on separation, domestic abuse and crime, in a single Combined Court.
What a special guardianship case from Swindon actually involves
A grandchild moved in with a grandparent and stayed. The court had to decide whether lasting authority should pass without ending the parents’ status. The route is Children Act 1989 s.14A, which bars the application for three months after notice reaches the right authority. From Swindon, the venue is Swindon Combined Court.
The court made a special guardianship order in favour of the grandparent. This gave the grandparent the authority to make the child’s day-to-day upbringing decisions while preserving the parents’ legal status and parental responsibility. The order reflected the court’s assessment of the child’s welfare on the evidence available in that individual case. Every case turns on its own facts, evidence and welfare considerations; this outcome is not a prediction or promise about any other family’s circumstances.
Outcomes turn entirely on the facts of each case. Nothing here is a prediction or a promise about any other case.
Why does GOV.UK not list divorce hearings at Swindon Combined Court?
Because the Islington Street list does not include them. GOV.UK’s “This location handles” entry for Swindon Combined Court names adoption, childcare arrangements if you separate from your partner, domestic abuse, housing, money claims and bankruptcy — and divorce hearings are not on it. The tell is in the phone numbers: GOV.UK publishes 01793 690 500 as the Islington Street enquiry line, but routes divorce enquiries away to a national Divorce Contact Centre. So a Swindon separation can split in two from the first day, with the children application at Islington Street and the divorce itself running nowhere near it.
Why use divorce specialists in Swindon if the divorce itself never reaches Islington Street?
Because the money side of a Swindon separation can still land in the same Islington Street building as the children application. GOV.UK lists money claims, housing and bankruptcy there, while the divorce sits on a national track that building does not handle. So ask whoever you instruct which of the two tracks they actually run: Islington Street, or the national divorce route. A firm that does family law and nothing else holds the Islington Street end and the national one together; a generalist splits them between departments and you become the messenger.
Who do I give the three months’ notice to if I live near Swindon?
Whichever authority you are ordinarily resident in — and near Swindon that is not obvious. Swindon Borough Council’s own page lists four neighbouring authorities: Wiltshire Council, West Berkshire Council, Cotswold District Council and Vale of White Horse District Council. Two of those four are district councils, but GOV.UK is explicit that social care belongs to the county tier. So for Cotswold addresses it is Gloucestershire County Council, and for Vale of White Horse addresses it is Oxfordshire County Council.
Send a special guardianship notice to Cotswold or Vale of White Horse and the three months under Children Act 1989 s.14A(7) start again from scratch. It is the most expensive mistake available on a Swindon-edge application, and it is made months before anyone sees Islington Street. Our guide to Special Guardianship for Grandparents sets out the wider picture; whether yours is Swindon Borough, Wiltshire, West Berkshire, Gloucestershire or Oxfordshire is the first thing to pin down with family lawyers in Swindon, before the notice goes anywhere.
Is the drug and alcohol court at Swindon open to my family?
Possibly not, and this catches people out. Wiltshire FDAC launched in June 2022. It sits inside Wiltshire Council’s Specialist Assessment, Intervention and Family Time team and operates from the family court in Swindon under a specially trained judge. But it is published as being available to families living in Wiltshire. Swindon Borough Council is a separate unitary authority from Wiltshire Council. So a problem-solving court runs out of Islington Street, yet whether your family can use it turns on which side of the Swindon–Wiltshire boundary you live on.
How close do family lawyers in Swindon need to be to Islington Street?
Not as close as most people assume. Your hearing is listed at Islington Street whoever advises you, and the court counter there is by appointment only in any event. Kabir Family Law has no office in Swindon, and our nearest is Oxford. Where you want to sit across a table from someone, pre-booked local appointments can be arranged, in Swindon or at the Oxford office.
What will a free consultation settle about your Swindon case?
It should settle three things: which authority your notice has to go to, whether your matter is one Islington Street actually handles, and whether the clock has already started. You set out the facts as you have them, and a specialist tells you which routes are open. There is no obligation. If you want divorce specialists in Swindon and something is also heading for Islington Street, raise both when you call 0330 094 5880 to book a free consultation.
