Searching for family lawyers in Peterborough often starts with a letter from Rivergate, from the city council or from a former partner. If you live in Peterborough and your marriage, your finances or your children's arrangements have reached the point of a decision, Kabir Family Law's family law specialists work on all three. Three things shape a Peterborough case before anyone reaches a hearing: only the Rivergate courthouse carries a Family Court code, judiciary.uk names Peterborough and not Cambridge as a Designated Family Judge's court, and one council covers the whole city where the rest of Cambridgeshire has two.

Complex Children Specialist & Client Support
Peterborough work is routed to Hannah Overton. Her published focus is complex children cases, including grandparents and wider family trying to keep contact, and matters running alongside a local authority or CAFCASS — which is what a single-authority city with one family courthouse tends to throw up.
What a domestic abuse case from Peterborough actually involves
A young child was distressed through both periods of contact, after controlling behaviour in the relationship. The court had to weigh a welfare report against evidence that had moved on, and a parent ignoring orders. The route was Children Act 1989 s.7, read with Practice Direction 12J of the Family Procedure Rules 2010. From Peterborough, that application goes to Peterborough Combined Court Centre.
The court dismissed the other parent’s application and confirmed that the child lives with the parent who had been caring for them. It also made a barring order, preventing further applications being made without the court’s permission for a defined period. Outcomes of this kind turn entirely on the evidence in the individual case. Nothing here is a prediction or a promise about any other case.

Rivergate or Bridge Street — which Peterborough courthouse takes a family case?
The answer is Rivergate. Peterborough Combined Court Centre, in Crown Buildings, is the only address in the city with a Family Court location code: 294, the same digits as its County Court code. The Bridge Street magistrates’ building runs on code 1949 and lists no family code at all, yet GOV.UK puts domestic abuse under both, which is exactly where people go wrong. Rivergate is a Crown Court as well, code 473, and takes High Court work, so criminal lists are running in the same building on the morning you arrive. Its counter opens 10am to 2pm and only by prior appointment, so nothing can simply be handed in on the way past.
How far beyond Rivergate do divorce specialists in Peterborough look on money matters?
A long way outside the city. The judiciary’s Financial Remedies Court schedule of March 2026 places Peterborough at the head of a zone covering “Norfolk, Essex & Suffolk, and Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Hertfordshire” — eleven courts running from Norwich down to Watford. GOV.UK also gives Rivergate a financial remedy mailbox of its own, apart from the general family one. Anyone treating a Peterborough financial order as a purely local matter has not read that schedule. Family law is the only work this firm takes, so the money and the children stay with one team, and you can talk through what Form A sets in motion before committing to anything.
Which council handles children’s social care in Peterborough?
Peterborough City Council handles it on its own. GOV.UK’s council finder answers Peterborough with a single authority and no county tier above it. Ask the same finder about Cambridge and it answers that services there come from two, putting social care with Cambridgeshire County Council. A Peterborough family dealing with a social worker, an assessment or a report to the court is therefore dealing with one organisation from beginning to end, which is not true across the rest of Cambridgeshire. It also settles who you have to write to, and when. Where a grandparent or another relative is the person stepping in, the timetable turns on that authority’s report rather than on the court’s diary. Our guide on when to apply for special guardianship explains where that report sits in the sequence.
Comparing family lawyers in Peterborough with firms in Cambridge or Northampton
Kabir Family Law has no Peterborough office, and where a firm sits changes very little, because nothing about a Peterborough case is run from elsewhere. The judiciary’s list of Designated Family Judges’ courts includes Peterborough and places it on the South East circuit; Cambridge does not appear on that list at any point. Northampton, where our nearest office is, appears on the same list on the Midland circuit and sits in a different Financial Remedies Court zone, so instructing us moves neither your case nor your file. Choosing between divorce specialists in Peterborough and a firm further afield does not move the money side either: it stays in Peterborough’s zone. If being in the same room matters to you, pre-booked face-to-face appointments can be arranged, in Peterborough or at the Northampton office.
What will a first phone call tell you about your Peterborough case?
A family law specialist picks up, not a message-taker. Inside a few minutes you should know whether your matter belongs at Rivergate or Bridge Street, whether anything has to reach a counter that opens four hours a day and only by appointment, and which council is the one that must be told. Describe what has happened in your own words and you will hear which routes are realistic, and what each one would put you and your children through. Nothing is owed afterwards.
